"Life is good
in Cameron Wood" is the neighborhood motto. Situated about mid-way
between Southpark & Ballantyne and approximately 15 minutes south
of City Center during non-rush hours. It features tennis
courts, swimming pool, walking trails and a very active
Homeowner's Association with socials, etc. throughout the year.
The 386 acres
of land with a man made pond was a hunting preserve of the Belk
family until 1965. John Belk realized this land was too far out
from the center of Charlotte for the shopping mall that he and
George Ivey planned to develop and have their 2 dept. stores
anchor. In exchange for this hunting preserve and $1 million, Belk
and Ivey got the Harris "backyard" which consisted of 104 acres of
dairy farm which is now the site of Southpark Mall. Cameron Wood
is named for James Harris's son, Cameron.
Mulvaney
Homes bought the land from the Harris family for approximately $10
million UDC bought out Mulvaney Homes & the first home was
completed in 1986. In 1995, the remaining home sites sold to David
Weekly and the homes were completed in 2000. There are 804
homes in Cameron Wood.
Cameron Wood
grew to be the largest planned community in Charlotte/Mecklenburg
until Highland Creek located in the University area was developed.
